Doban

In 2023, HSI closed one of the most horrific dog meat farms the team encountered in South Korea. Dog meat farms are facilities where dogs are bred and raised for human consumption in horrible conditions. . Often deprived of basic care and comfort, these animals live in cramped and unsanitary environments, leading to significant physical and emotional trauma. The closure of this farm marked a significant step towards ending this cruel practice in South Korea. Among the 200 dogs rescued from this facility was a timid puppy named Doban.
Doban was found in a cramped and dirty cage, covered in feces. He was just a few months old when he was rescued. The team named him Doban, which means “partner” in Korean, foreshadowing the bright future ahead for this little puppy.

Following his rescue, Doban was brought to our Canadian care and rehabilitation centre for a chance at a new life.  Doban slowly began to come out of his shell. We provided him with the essential vet care, rehabilitation, and behavioural therapy he needed to heal. Over time, he started building confidence and transformed into a beautiful dog who looked and acted like a playful puppy, complete with oversized paws and an irresistible charm.

Eventually, Doban was ready for adoption. It wasn’t long before a couple living on the outskirts of the city fell in love with him. Recently, our team had the opportunity to visit Doban in his new home, and we were blown away by his remarkable transformation. The adopters’ home has a spacious yard, where we watched him play confidently with his owner.

Now, Doban is a friendly dog who loves playing in the tall reeds of his backyard. His joy is infectious, and he has formed a strong bond with his owners, who continue to build on the foundation our team at the center laid. Every day, they help Doban learn new skills to thrive. Once overwhelmed by the sounds, smells, and bustling crowds of downtown Montreal, Doban has learned to face his fears with positive reinforcement. He now enjoys his city walks—and has even become something of a local celebrity! His dad has made him the mascot of his antique store, where Doban charms customers during his weekly visits. Locals always stop by to say hello when Doban’s in the shop!
