Overview
Puppy mills remain a widespread problem in Canada and around the world. A puppy mill is an inhumane, high-volume dog breeding facility that churns out puppies for profit, often in squalid conditions. Puppy mills commonly sell through internet sales, online classified ads, flea markets and pet stores. Unsuspecting buyers contribute to the problem.

The Issue
- Across Canada, countless puppy mills confine hundreds of thousands of dogs and puppies in squalid conditions.
- Dogs in puppy mills are confined to small, filthy cages, often without proper access to food and water.
- Dogs are forced to breed over and over again, to produce puppies to be sold in pet stores or online, profiting the breeder.
- Breeding dogs live their whole lives in cages. They never see the outside world and do not experience human contact or love.
- Due to poor sanitation, overbreeding and a lack of preventive veterinary care, the puppies from puppy mills frequently suffer from a variety of health issues, creating heartbreaking challenges for families who should be enjoying the delights of adopting a new family member.
Unfortunately, puppy mills are all too common in Canada. While many are located in Québec, these facilities operate from coast to coast. It is believed that the vast majority of puppies sold in pet stores and online in Canada come from puppy mills.
